5 Things to Check on Your Vehicle Before Your Summer Road Trip

For New Brunswickers, summer is the perfect time to hit the open road and embark on an exciting road trip adventure. Before you pack your bags and set off on your journey, ensuring your vehicle is in top-notch condition is crucial.

Performing a few essential checks beforehand can help prevent breakdowns, keep you safe, and ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. You can do a few of these checks on your own, but some should be done by a professional mechanic or auto garage.

Tires

Your tires are the only point of contact between your car and the road, so ensuring they are in excellent condition is vital. Start by checking the tire pressure using a gauge, and make sure it matches the recommended levels stated in your car’s manual.

Additionally, inspect the tire treads for wear and tear. If the treads are worn down, it’s time to replace your tires. You will also want to check your vehicle alignment to ensure you don’t wear your tires unevenly (Pssst.. We can help you with that!)

Finally, remember also to check the spare tire and ensure you have the necessary tools to change a tire if needed.

Fluids

Proper fluid levels are essential for long summer road trips for your car’s optimal performance. Check the engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Ensure that each fluid appears clean and free of contaminants. If any fluid is low or dirty, it’s advisable to get it changed or topped up.

Brakes

Brakes play a crucial role in your safety on the road. Ensure your brake pads and discs are in good condition. If you notice squeaking or grinding noises, it’s a sign that they need attention. Getting a professional mechanic to help you on this one is essential!

Battery

The last thing you want is a dead battery during your road trip. Inspect your car’s battery terminals for any signs of corrosion and clean them if needed. Test the battery’s voltage using a voltmeter to ensure it has enough charge. If your battery is over three years old or shows signs of weakness, replacing it before your trip is recommended.

Lights and Wipers

Proper visibility is crucial for safe driving. Check that all your lights are working correctly, including headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. Replace any bulbs that are burnt out.

Additionally, inspect your windshield wipers for signs of wear and tear. If they leave streaks or don’t effectively clear the windshield, replace them with new ones to ensure clear visibility during unexpected summer showers. This is something you may be able to do on your own, but if not, a local mechanic or auto garage will be happy to help!

When in doubt, hire a professional

A successful summer road trip begins with a well-maintained car. By checking these five essential areas—tires, fluids, brakes, battery, and lights—you can significantly reduce the risk of breakdowns and ensure a smooth, safe, and enjoyable journey.

Remember, if you’re unsure about any aspect of your car’s condition, it’s always best to consult a professional mechanic or auto repair shop who can thoroughly inspect and make any necessary repairs or replacements. Take the time to prepare your car properly, and you’ll be ready to embark on an unforgettable summer adventure!
