With the ever increasing high price of gas, have you ever wondered what you can do to get more for your gasoline purchase? Continue reading for some practical tips you can easily start implementing right away.
First, only buy or fill up your vehicle in the early morning when temperatures are cooler. All service station storage tanks are buried beneath the ground. Colder ground means denser gasoline, which means more gasoline for your money. (When it gets warmer, gasoline expands, so buying the afternoon or evening means your litre is not exactly a litre. So, don’t wait until after lunchtime to fill up.
Second, when you’re filling up, keep the nozzle on low speed. Most nozzles have three settings: low, medium, and high. Low speeds minimize the creation of vapors. Vapors are created when you push down hard on the trigger. If you are pumping at the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank (all hoses at the pump have a vapor return), so you’re getting less worth for your money. Keep the nozzle on low, and you’ll avoid wasting gallons of gas.
A very important tip is to fill up when half full. The more gas you have in your tank, the less air there is occupying its empty space. As the gas fills your tank, the volume increases. The increased volume creates a vacuum effect inside the tank, sucking up any remaining air. Air in the tank reduces the efficiency of the gasoline.
Lastly, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.
Finally, remember that gasoline trucks are temperature compensated. Every gallon of gasoline is measured and stored at the same temperature. This makes it easier to measure out the correct amount of gas for each gallon of gas.
So, next time you need gas, fill up early in the morning, and when your tank is half-full.
